About

Much of our book includes “covers” of classic jazz recordings. It’s often useful to hear these recordings to get a feel for how the original sounded, to learn the feel and tempo, and so forth (especially if you’re new to the band or unfamiliar with the piece).

Use this list to hear the source recordings and examples (mostly from YouTube) of charts we play in the Indian Hill Big Band book. Here, “source” usually means the source recording by the original artist (Ellington, Basie, and so forth) that is the closest match to the arrangement we have in our book. However, these aren’t always available on the web, so in a pinch, I’ll offer sample recordings provided by the publisher, or even a recorded performance by IHBB, but only if I can’t find a more authoritative recorded example. Sometimes, the source might even be just a small-group recording of the tune (usually for lesser-known pieces where I couldn’t find a big band example, but where it’s still useful to at least hear the melody/harmony of the tune).

I also occasionally include brief notes to give a little context for those unfamiliar with the song or recording.

Note that not all titles in our book are included here; we’ll add them as we find them. There might also be a few entries that were once in our active book, but are now currently on the shelf. And there are some titles for charts that are currently under consideration. See the Indian Hill Big Band Repertoire Lists page for the canonical list of what’s currently active.

And if you find a dead link, please let me know.
